South Region Luncheon

Presented by Mary Crocker Cook, LMFT and Steve Darrow, LCSW (1.5 CEUs)

Have you ever been working with a couple and felt they needed more support than what you alone could offer? Have you ever worked with a couple where one partner was a bit too involved in drugs/alcohol, then found yourself stuck in the dynamic? Have you ever taken a couple that was a bit closer to physical violence or verbal abuse than you are comfortable with?

If you have (or haven't yet!), then you will want to learn more about Conjoint Couples Therapy. Steve Darrow and Mary Cook will not only present about their experience in providing this therapy to high conflict couples, but we will also be encouraging you to try Conjoint Couples Therapy for yourself. After a short presentation about Conjoint Couples Therapy we will get a chance to practice using this model. You may find that partnering up with another therapist might be the best move for your development as a therapist and enhance your income as well. Come on out and learn about this modality and have a few laughs with Steve and Mary.

When we refer to our conjoint model, we are explicitly referring to the following structure currently used in our work with high conflict couples:

  1. Each person in the couple meets with either Mary or Steve every two weeks.
  2. The couple meets with both Steve and Mary every two weeks.
  3. The division into therapeutic dyads is not necessarily gender specific, but is based on a clinical assessment of client compatibility needs both in style and issue focus.

We will explore effective conjoint therapy structure, and keys to successful conjoint therapy team development. We will also provide a clinical vignette examples.

Learning Objectives
After attending this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. Identify the theoretical and practical rationale for the conjoint model
  2. Identify the nine phases of conjoint therapy team development
